Congratulations to our 2021-2022 Pilot and Feasibility Grant Award Recipients!
The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center is pleased to announce the results of its eleventh round of pilot and feasibility research grants. These grant awards fund innovative pilot projects by early career investigators who are entering the diabetes research field, or established investigators with innovative ideas that focus on a new direction in diabetes research. The goal of the program is to generate data that will enable awardees to compete for peer-reviewed national funding for projects that show exceptional promise.
A total of 16 researchers from across the UI campus submitted meritorious proposals that underwent a comprehensive and competitive two-stage review. Two applicants were selected to receive a catalyst award grant of $50,000 to support their research proposal, with the possibility for a second year of funding, for a total of $100,000 over a two-year period. One applicant was selected to receive a one-year seed grant award of $5,000 to support discreet research proposals to obtain data needed to generate essential preliminary data in a diabetes-related project to increase competitive for subsequent extramural funding.

Assistant Professor of Neuroscience and Pharmacology
Project: Genetic dissection of hypothalamic regulators of thermogenic adipose tissue
The paraventricular hypothalamus (PVH) is a crucial mediator of energy balance. Despite considerable efforts to identify the specific PVH neuron subtypes that regulate hunger and satiety, far less attention has been paid to PVH neurons that control metabolism. Thus, the specific PVH neuron subtypes involved in the control of thermogenic adipose tissue remain unknown. To address this gap in knowledge, we aim to identify the molecular signature of PVH neurons that project to the spinal cord or NTS and functionally characterize their effects on thermogenic adipose tissue. These studies will generate preliminary data for future NIH funding related to the neural control of thermogenic adipose tissue and its potential as a therapeutic for obesity and cardiometabolic disease.

Project: The Role of Pituitary-Hepatic Crosstalk in Obesity-Associated Fatty Liver Disease
Approximately 80% of obese individuals have liver disease, with the most common form being nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Obesity also lowers production of pituitary hormones, which play key roles in maintaining metabolic homeostasis in the liver. At the cellular level, the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is the major site to make proteins and fats for the cells. In this study, we will investigate the impact of obesity on pituitary endocrine function and its functional output on the pathogenesis of NAFLD through examining the pituitary-liver ER cross talk.

Project: Insulin resistance in a mouse model of pancreatic cancer-induced cachexia
Diabetes and a decreased response to insulin are common in patients with new-onset pancreatic cancer, as is the atrophy of skeletal muscles. Atrophy, or decreased skeletal muscle size, is associated with poor outcomes in cancer patients, including shorter survival. In our Seed Grant project, we will test the idea that mice with pancreatic cancer develop decreased sensitivity to insulin before their muscles start to become smaller. Because we know that decreased responsiveness to insulin is associated with muscle atrophy in patients with diabetes, we hope to uncover shared causes for decreased muscle size in diabetic patients and cancer patients and identify new opportunities to preserve muscle size of patients with cancer.

Reading: 2 Kings 23:21-30
The king commanded all the people, “Celebrate a Passover to the Lord your God following what is instructed in this scroll containing the covenant.” A Passover like this hadn’t been celebrated since the days when the judges judged Israel; neither had it been celebrated during all the days of the Israelite and Judean kings. But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah’s rule, this Passover was celebrated to the Lord in Jerusalem.
Josiah burned those who consulted dead spirits and the mediums, the household gods and the worthless idols—all the monstrous things that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem. In this way Josiah fulfilled the words of the Instruction written in the scroll that the priest Hilkiah found in the Lord’s temple. There’s never been a king like Josiah, whether before or after him, who turned to the Lord with all his heart, all his being, and all his strength, in agreement with everything in the Instruction from Moses.
Even so, the Lord didn’t turn away from the great rage that burned against Judah on account of all that Manasseh had done to make him angry. The Lord said, “I will remove Judah from my presence just as I removed Israel. I will reject this city, Jerusalem, which I chose, and this temple where I promised my name would reside.”
The rest of Josiah’s deeds and all that he accomplished, aren’t they written in the official records of Judah’s kings? In his days, the Egyptian king Pharaoh Neco marched against the Assyrian king at the Euphrates River. King Josiah marched out to intercept him. But when Neco encountered Josiah in Megiddo, he killed the king. Josiah’s servants took his body from Megiddo in a chariot. They brought him to Jerusalem and buried him in his own tomb. The people of the land took Jehoahaz, Josiah’s son, anointed him, and made him king after his father.

If anyone teaches anything different and doesn’t agree with sound teaching about our Lord Jesus Christ and teaching that is consistent with godliness, that person is conceited. They don’t understand anything but have a sick obsession with debates and arguments. This creates jealousy, conflict, verbal abuse, and evil suspicions. There is constant bickering between people whose minds are ruined and who have been robbed of the truth. They think that godliness is a way to make money! Actually, godliness is a great source of profit when it is combined with being happy with what you already have. We didn’t bring anything into the world and so we can’t take anything out of it: we’ll be happy with food and clothing. But people who are trying to get rich fall into temptation. They are trapped by many stupid and harmful passions that plunge people into ruin and destruction. The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some have wandered away from the faith and have impaled themselves with a lot of pain because they made money their goal.

Details:
According to reports, the blood St. Januarius liquefied in Naples and the miracle of St. Januarius was recreated on September 19, 2017.
The recreation of this miracle is believed to be a good sign for the city of Naples.
During the previous occurrence, on December 16, 2016, the blood did not liquefy. This was believed to be a bad omen and a sign of impending destruction and devastation.

Detailed documentation of this miracle has been kept since 1389, and each time the blood did not liquefy, some disaster occurred shortly after.
According to Dormi A Napoli, the absence of the miracle has preceded 22 epidemics, 11 revolutions, three droughts, 14 archbishops death (within a 30-day period), nine dead popes (over a period of a few weeks), four wars, 19 earthquakes, and three religious persecutions.
