The Rosary Overcomes Radical Islam

She (Mary) will renew the wonders of Lepanto!
Pope Leo XIII
A Bishop in Nigeria, Boko Haram, and a Sword
In April 2014, Boko Haram kidnapped more than 200 young girls from a school in Nigeria, Africa. Boko Haram is the notorious radical Muslim group that violently slaughters non-Muslims by such means as decapitation or burning people alive.
In December 2014, Jesus appeared to a Catholic bishop in Nigeria and instructed him that the rosary was the weapon that would overcome Boko Haram. Bishop Oliver Dashe Doeme of the Diocese of Maiduguri, Nigeria, claims that one evening, while he was praying his rosary, Jesus appeared to him holding a sword. During the vision, Jesus extended the sword toward the bishop. When the bishop went to take the sword from Jesus, it miraculously transformed into a rosary! Once the bishop had the rosary sword in his hands, Jesus looked at him and said three times, "Boko Haram is gone! Boko Haram is gone! Boko Haram is gone!"
After the bishop of Maiduguri had his vision, he began to promote the rosary in his diocese in Nigeria. In many of his interviews, he repeats his vision and informs his listeners of his interpretation of the vision in the following words: "As soon as I received the sword, it turned into a rosary. I didn't need any prophet to give me the explanation. It was clear that with the rosary we would be able to expel Boko Haram." On October 13, 2016, dozens of kidnapped girls were suddenly released by Boko Haram from captivity. In May 2017, another 83 girls were released. Then, on July 3, 2017, 700 members of Boko Haram surrendered their weapons and turned themselves into Nigerian authorities.

Saint Gemma Galgani was born at Camigliano in Tuscany, Italy, in 1878. Her mother died when she was seven years old, and from that time on her life was one of continuous suffering. Her afflictions were caused by ill-health, by the poverty into which her family fell, by the scoffing of those who took offense at her practices of devotion, and finally, by the physical attacks of the devil. Through it all, however, she remained at peace and enjoyed constant communion with our Lord, who spoke to her as if He were bodily present. She earnestly desired to be a Passionist nun, but was not accepted because of her physical infirmities.
.
She was the subject of various extraordinary supernatural phenomena — visions, ecstasies, revelations, supernatural knowledge, conversations with her visible Guardian Angel, prophecy and miracles. Her director verified that letters which she wrote and committed to the care of her good Angel were infallibly delivered. Saint Gemma had periodically occurring stigmata between 1899 and 1901. At one time during her sufferings, she was asked: If Jesus gave you the choice between two alternatives, either going immediately to heaven and having your sufferings disappear, or else remaining here in suffering to procure still more glory for the Lord, which would you choose? She answered: I prefer to remain here rather than going to heaven, when it is a question of suffering for Jesus and His glory. She died on Holy Saturday in 1903 and was canonized in 1940.
.
Reflection. Often say with Saint Augustine: Write, O most loving Saviour, Thy wounds upon my heart, that I may always read in them Thy pains and Thy love. The afflictions that God sends us are really mercies and blessings; they are the very precious talents which we must increase, augmenting our love and affection for God by the practice of virtue.
.
Eternal Father, I wish to honor St. Gemma Galgani, and I give Thee thanks for all the graces Thou hast bestowed upon her. I ask Thee to please increase grace in my soul through the merits of this saint, and I commit the end of my life to her by this special prayer, so that by virtue of Thy goodness and promise, St. Gemma Galgani might be my advocate and provide whatever is needed at that hour. Amen

MONDAY OF THE FIFTH (5TH) WEEK OF EASTER
Memorial of St. Catherine of Siena
LECTIONARY 285
FIRST READING
Acts 14:5-18
There was an attempt in Iconium by both the Gentiles and the Jews, together with their leaders, to attack and stone Paul and Barnabas. They realized it, and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding countryside, where they continued to proclaim the Good News. At Lystra there was a crippled man, lame from birth, who had never walked. He listened to Paul speaking, who looked intently at him, saw that he had the faith to be healed, and called out in a loud voice, "Stand up straight on your feet." He jumped up and began to walk about. When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they cried out in Lycaonian, "The gods have come down to us in human form." They called Barnabas "Zeus" and Paul "Hermes," because he was the chief speaker. And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, for he together with the people intended to offer sacrifice. The Apostles Barnabas and Paul tore their garments when they heard this and rushed out into the crowd, shouting, "Men, why are you doing this? We are of the same nature as you, human beings. We proclaim to you good news that you should turn from these idols to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and all that is in them. In past generations he allowed all Gentiles to go their own ways; yet, in bestowing his goodness, he did not leave himself without witness, for he gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, and filled you with nourishment and gladness for your hearts." Even with these words, they scarcely restrained the crowds from offering sacrifice to them.

Ezekiel 36
New International Version
Hope for the Mountains of Israel
36 “Son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel and say, ‘Mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord. 2 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: The enemy said of you, “Aha! The ancient heights have become our possession.”’ 3 Therefore prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because they ravaged and crushed you from every side so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations and the object of people’s malicious talk and slander, 4 therefore, mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign Lord: This is what the Sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys, to the desolate ruins and the deserted towns that have been plundered and ridiculed by the rest of the nations around you— 5 this is what the Sovereign Lord says: In my burning zeal I have spoken against the rest of the nations, and against all Edom, for with glee and with malice in their hearts they made my land their own possession so that they might plunder its pastureland.’ 6 Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel and say to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I speak in my jealous wrath because you have suffered the scorn of the nations. 7 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I swear with uplifted hand that the nations around you will also suffer scorn.
8 “‘But you, mountains of Israel, will produce branches and fruit for my people Israel, for they will soon come home. 9 I am concerned for you and will look on you with favor; you will be plowed and sown, 10 and I will cause many people to live on you—yes, all of Israel. The towns will be inhabited and the ruins rebuilt. 11 I will increase the number of people and animals living on you, and they will be fruitful and become numerous. I will settle people on you as in the past and will make you prosper more than before. Then you will know that I am the Lord. 12 I will cause people, my people Israel, to live on you. They will possess you, and you will be their inheritance; you will never again deprive them of their children.
13 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because some say to you, “You devour people and deprive your nation of its children,” 14 therefore you will no longer devour people or make your nation childless, declares the Sovereign Lord. 15 No longer will I make you hear the taunts of the nations, and no longer will you suffer the scorn of the peoples or cause your nation to fall, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”
Israel’s Restoration Assured
16 Again the word of the Lord came to me: 17 “Son of man, when the people of Israel were living in their own land, they defiled it by their conduct and their actions. Their conduct was like a woman’s monthly uncleanness in my sight. 18 So I poured out my wrath on them because they had shed blood in the land and because they had defiled it with their idols.

19 I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered through the countries; I judged them according to their conduct and their actions. 20 And wherever they went among the nations they profaned my holy name, for it was said of them, ‘These are the Lord’s people, and yet they had to leave his land.’ 21 I had concern for my holy name, which the people of Israel profaned among the nations where they had gone.
22 “Therefore say to the Israelites, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you have gone. 23 I will show the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy through you before their eyes.
24 “‘For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. 25 I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. 28 Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people, and I will be your God. 29 I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will call for the grain and make it plentiful and will not bring famine upon you. 30 I will increase the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field, so that you will no longer suffer disgrace among the nations because of famine. 31 Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices. 32 I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign Lord. Be ashamed and disgraced for your conduct, people of Israel!
33 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I cleanse you from all your sins, I will resettle your towns, and the ruins will be rebuilt. 34 The desolate land will be cultivated instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass through it. 35 They will say, “This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden; the cities that were lying in ruins, desolate and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited.” 36 Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the Lord have rebuilt what was destroyed and have replanted what was desolate. I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.’
37 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Once again I will yield to Israel’s plea and do this for them: I will make their people as numerous as sheep, 38 as numerous as the flocks for offerings at Jerusalem during her appointed festivals. So will the ruined cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

For you we sigh, moan and weep

Today is the feast of Pope Saint Pius V
Pope Saint Pius V was born Antonio Ghislieri in 1504 in Bosco, a part of the duchy of Milan, Italy. As youth he worked as a shepherd boy until he entered the Dominican order at the age of 14 and took the name Michele. He was ordained a priest in 1528, and was assigned to lecture at the university in Pavia. He taught there for 16 years. As the superior of several Dominican communities, he proved himself to be a disciplined reformer, bringing religious zeal and discipline back into those houses where the practice of the faith was becoming lax. As novice master, he strove to develop the practice of the monastic virtues. He fasted, did penance, passed long hours of the night in meditation and prayer, setting an example by living the faith for his novices wishing to advance in the Dominican Order.
As his reputation grew, so did his responsibilities and he was assigned by Pope Paul IV as Bishop of Sutri and selected to be an inquisitor of the faith in Milan and Lombardy. A year later he received the Cardinal’s hat and was promoted to Supreme Inquisitor over all of Christendom. It was during the time of the Protestant Reformation and he worked to fight against the heresies that were weakening the Church from within, convicting heretical bishops while defending others falsely accused who remained faithful to Church teachings. He even dared to rebuke his predecessor, Pope Pius IV, for extravagance and nepotism when he attempted to make his nephew, then only thirteen years old, a Cardinal.
Pius V was elected pope in 1566 and charged with the task of implementing the sweeping reforms called for by the Council. He ordered the founding of seminaries for the proper training of priests. He published a new missal, a new breviary, a new catechism, and established the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Pius zealously carried out church reforms and succeeded in keeping Protestantism out of Italy. He patiently served the sick and the poor by building hospitals, providing food for the hungry, and giving money customarily used for the papal banquets to poor Roman converts. His decision to keep wearing his white Dominican habit led to the custom of the pope wearing a white cassock, a practice that continues even to today.
In striving to reform both Church and state, Pius encountered vehement opposition from England’s Queen Elizabeth I, and 1570 he excommunicated her, thus worsening the position of Catholics in England.
To consolidate the Church’s power in the face of the threatening Ottoman Empire, Pius V gathered Catholic states into an allegiance known as the Holy League. He organized the campaign that led to the victory of the Spanish, Venetian, and papal fleets over the Ottoman Empire in the famous Battle of Lepanto in 1571. The navy of the Holy League was greatly outnumbered by the Turkish navy. Pius rallied the faithful throughout the Papal States to ask for the intercession of the Blessed Mother by praying the rosary for the success of the Holy League fleet. The great battle ensued on October 7, 1571. The weather took a turn and the Turkish fleet was defeated, thus ending the Ottoman threat to Christian Europe. Credit was given to the Blessed Mother’s intervention, an intervention that is still celebrated to this day every October 7th, the Feast of the Holy Rosary with the entire month of October being dedicated to Mary and the Holy Rosary.
God vs Satan
The Didach, or The Teachings of the Twelve Apostles, tells us that there are two ways to live, one of life and one of death, and that there is much difference between them.
The way of life follows the Commandments and the Beatitudes. The way of death is evil and accursed, and follows Satan and his works. Which way one lives is an act of their own free will and intellect. But the right choice must be made in order to earn eternal life in God’s Kingdom. There is a struggle between the two ways, likened to a battle on the playing field of one’s daily trials. There is:
- Life verses Death.
- Good verses evil.
- God verses Satan.
- Sons of God vs Sons of Man.
- Keepers of the supernatural life vs Keepers of earthly life.
- Love of God vs Love of Satan
- Followers of Jesus Christ vs Followers of Satan.
- Seekers of Heavenly Grace vs Seekers of earthly sin.
- Seekers of eternal salvation vs seekers of eternal damnation.
- Walkers on the path to salvation vs walkers on the path to destruction.
- Worshippers of God vs worshippers of Idols
- Followers of peace vs followers of war.
- Followers of love vs followers of hate.
- Followers of spiritual desires vs followers of earthly desires.
- Followers of Light vs followers of darkness
- Believers in the Holy Trinity vs believers in self.
- Seekers in humility vs seekers in pride
- Seekers in Truth vs seekers in Lies.
- Those who live in spiritual freedom vs those who live in bondage.
- Those marked with the Cross vs those marked with 666.
- Those who act with love vs those who act with hate.
- Those who seek a heavenly paradise vs those who seek an earthly paradise.
- Those who seek grace vs those who seek gold.
- Those who seek the Body and Blood of Christ vs those who seek the body of another.
- Those who seek the Lamb of God vs those who seek the wolf in sheep’s clothing.
- Those on their knees who worship God vs those on their knees who worship Satan.
- Those who have ears and hear vs those who are deaf to the Word.
- Those who have eyes that see vs those who are blind to see.
- Those who seek eternal Life vs those who seek eternal death.
The list is endless. Evil is endless. Our earthly struggle between good verses bad is endless. It is not easy to follow the Way of Life. So God gives us His mercy, forgiveness and graces to aid in our struggle. The Son of God gives us His Body and Blood. The Holy Spirit gives us His seven spiritual gifts. The Holy Catholic Church gives us the Seven Sacraments, and aids us in the Way of Life through its teachings and dogma. The choice is easy to make. Be it so.
